Education Awards

Enhancing Education through Generosity
A Legacy of Fred Wells

This trust fund was established in 1946 under the will of Fred W. Wells with the Pioneer National Bank-Franklin as a trustee.  His will directed that a portion of the income from the fund be used for the purpose of aiding students

to obtain a higher education.

Eligibility

Any resident of Ashfield, Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Conway, Deerfield, Gill, Greenfield, Hawley, Heath, Leyden, Monroe, Montague, Northfield, Rowe or Shelburne who has resided or whose parents have resided in any of said towns for not less than two years prior to the date of application shall be eligible.

The will states that anyone seeking to “obtain an education in agricultural or mechanical subjects to better fit them for such work, or for one of the regularly recognized professions” may apply.

The actual awards will be made by an independent scholarship committee whose members have been requested to consider, among other factors, the applicant’s scholastic ability, need, character, leadership ability, integrity, and participation in work and/or extra-curricular activities.  Awards made shall be contingent upon the applicant’s acceptance into an accredited college, university, technical, mechanical or agricultural institution, either as an undergraduate or graduate student.

Scholarship Awards

Awards vary based on guidelines established by the Trust. While no applicant should anticipate a full award, the maximum award can not be over $5,000 in any one year or over $20,000 total for any student over their entire education.  An applicant may receive scholarship awards during several years of his/her education but awards, if any, may vary from year to year based on several factors including both funds available and the strength and thoroughness of the annual application provided by the applicant.  A complete, new application, including new recommendations and a current transcript will be required to re-apply each year for consideration.

Application

Applications are available at Town Halls, High Schools and Franklin County Branches of Greenfield Savings Bank. The application can also be downloaded and printed from this website through the following download:
